Bufo (5-MeO-DMT)

Bufo refers to the secretion of the Incilius alvarius (formerly Bufo alvarius), commonly called the Colorado River toad or Sonoran Desert toad. This secretion contains 5-MeO-DMT, one of the most potent naturally occurring psychoactive substances. It is typically dried and then vaporized and inhaled to induce a rapid and intense mystical or nondual experience.

Today, many facilitators use synthetic 5-MeO-DMT rather than toad secretion. This practice protects the toads (whose populations are under threat due to overharvesting and habitat loss) and offers a more consistent, pure experience without the presence of toxic compounds also found in the toad’s secretion.

The effects of Bufo come on within seconds and last 10–30 minutes. Experiences vary widely but often include:

• A complete dissolution of ego or personal identity
• Intense feelings of unity with all existence
• Encounters with divine or universal consciousness
• A sense of dying and being reborn
• Deep emotional release, crying, or spontaneous vocalizations
• Non-verbal communication or light-based visions (less common than with other psychedelics)
   

Unlike psilocybin or ayahuasca, visuals are usually minimal or nonexistent. The experience is often described as energetic, vibrational, or frequency-based, rather than image-based.

When held in a safe, sacred, and intentional setting, Bufo can support:

Bufo (especially 5-MeO-DMT) is not safe for everyone. It is contraindicated for people who:

• Have a personal or family history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis 
• Have cardiovascular conditions (e.g., high blood pressure, arrhythmias, heart disease)
• Are currently using antidepressants, especially MAOIs or SSRIs
• Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or within a few months postpartum
• Have epilepsy or are prone to seizures
• Are in acute emotional crisis or unprocessed trauma without support
   

Additionally, 5-MeO-DMT should never be mixed with other substances. It is a very powerful compound that can lead to dangerous physiological or psychological responses if combined with other psychedelics, cannabis, or medications.

The synthetic form of 5-MeO-DMT offers:

• Toad conservation: Ethical harvesting is rare; most toads are endangered or mishandled
